Two great British straight-ahead jazz players, on trumpet and tenor sax, here in the company of three heavyweight stars of the New York scene – Basile, Patton and Karn. A swinging, authentic classic Hard-Bop sextet, in the mould of Horace Silver and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers – grounded in tradition but with an ear to the future.
Steve Fishwick is widely considered to be one of the best jazz trumpet players ever to come from the UK, and is rapidly gaining a global reputation thanks to his flawless technique, and his beautifully flowing, harmonically rich improvisations. He is one of an increasing number of trumpeters who have been heavily influenced by the melodic approach of the late great Kenny Dorham. Steve also cites Art Farmer, Miles Davis and Woody Shaw among his favourite players, but his style is very much his own. Trumpet great Wynton Marsalis recently said about him “Steve has his own style. He plays from the bottom to the top of the horn whilst maintaining the integrity of the chords. I can’t think of another trumpet player that can do what he does.”...

Steve leads his own quartet and co- leads a quintet with Welsh saxophonist Osian Roberts, with whom he recorded an album in NYC with legendary American pianist Cedar Walton and bass great Peter Washington, released in September 2009. Their latest project is a sextet featuring Frank Basile, one of the best exponents of baritone saxophone from NYC.
Steve and Osian Roberts met and played with Frank Basile when they were in NYC to record their album ‘…Meets Cedar Walton!‘ and they formed a mutual appreciation. The idea to someday play together on an extended run of gigs was born but quickly put on the back burner due to busy schedules. It wasn’t until 2012, when Osian and Steve travelled to NYC again to play at Rochester Jazz Festival that the idea was reborn. Since then Frank has been over to the UK for two extended tours, Osian, Steve and Matt Fishwick have travelled to NYC to play seven gigs with Frank and they have recorded two albums, When Night Falls and their latest In The Empire State.
The line-up appearing on this tour features two other great musicians from NYC, pianist Jeb Patton and bassist Mike Karn, making for an evening of swinging, authentic hard bop grounded in tradition but with an ear to the future.
New York-based pianist Jeb Patton has earned a stellar reputation within the jazz community, hailed as one of the most promising musicians of his generation. Touring with the Heath Brothers since the 1990s, he has appeared at top jazz festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe such as Newport, New Orleans, Monterey, North Sea, Salzburg and Baden-Baden. Patton has worked with a long list of prominent players including James Moody, Jackie McLean, Jon Faddis, Antonio Hart, Jimmy Cobb and many others.
Mike Karn started his musical life as a tenor saxophonist, but in a short time has established himself as one of the busiest and most in demand bass players on the New York jazz scene.
